Beyond Talk Therapy
How Combining Clinical Counseling with Reiki Offers Deeper Healing for Women
In the journey toward emotional well-being, many of us have found immense value in traditional clinical counseling, myself included. The power of talking through our experiences without judgement, experiencing validation (sometimes for the first time in our lives), understanding our thought patterns, and developing coping strategies is undeniable. Yet, for some women, talk therapy alone can feel incomplete. You might find yourself saying, "I understand it intellectually, but I still feel stuck." Or perhaps you notice physical tension, chronic stress, or an underlying sense of un-ease that words alone can't seem to touch.
I founded Luminaria Healing to be the type of practice I could not find for myself when I needed extra support. I knew that if I was looking for a mental health practictioner that combined alternative therapies, and focused exclusively on the unique needs of women, it was likely that other women were looking too.
The Missing Piece: Addressing the Mind-Body Connection
For too long, mental health has been viewed largely as a function of the mind, separate from the body. However, modern science is increasingly confirming what ancient wisdom traditions have known for centuries: our minds and bodies are intricately connected. Our emotions manifest physically, (think ‘Type A’ people and the increased risk of heart disease) and our physical state profoundly impacts our mental well-being.
This is particularly evident when it comes to stress, anxiety, and trauma. Even when we logically understand our triggers or past experiences, the "felt sense" in our body can remain, contributing to persistent symptoms. As a comprehensive review of research on the mind-body connection emphasizes, practices that strengthen this link through methods like mindfulness, breathwork, and body-oriented therapies can significantly enhance emotional resilience and aid in processing deep-seated issues like trauma and chronic pain. (Positive Psychology, "The Mind–Body Connection: Understanding Their Link," April 16, 2025).
How Clinical Counseling Lays the Foundation
I provide a safe, confidential space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through traditional evidence-based modalities like supportive psychotherapy, and trauma informed therapy, as well as creative alternatives such as journal and poetry therapy, and guided visualization you can learn to:
● Identify and reframe unhelpful thought patterns.
● Develop effective coping mechanisms for stress and emotional distress.
● Process past experiences and develop new narratives.
● Improve communication skills and healthy boundaries.
● Gain self-awareness and build self-compassion.
This foundational work is critical for lasting change and empowers you with intellectual and practical tools to navigate life's challenges.
Reiki: Unlocking Deeper Energetic & Emotional Release
Where words may reach their limit, Reiki steps in. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing technique that promotes deep relaxation and helps balance the body's natural energy system. It works on the principle that we all carry an unseen "life force energy" (think universal life force, or Qi) that flows through us, and when this energy is low or blocked, we are more likely to feel stressed, anxious, or unwell. This energy is the same energy that is assisted when we receive treatments such as acupuncture, acupressure or practice Emotional Freedom Technique (‘tapping’) or Qi Gong.
During a Reiki session, I place my hands on or just above your full clothed body based on your comfort level with physical touch. Clients often report feelings of warmth, tingling, sensing subtle colors, or profound peace. Research, including a recent meta-analysis from June 2024, indicates that short-term Reiki interventions can be effective in reducing anxiety. Another study from May 2025 also found significant reductions in pain, depression, and anxiety through Reiki application. (ResearchGate, "Therapeutic effects of Reiki on interventions for anxiety: a meta-analysis," June 10, 2024; ResearchGate, "Effects of Reiki on Anxiety, Depression, Pain, and Physiological Factors in Community-Dwelling Older Adults," May 28, 2025).
Integrating Reiki can help you:
● Release Stored Tension: Address the physical manifestations of stress and emotional pain that words might not reach.
● Balance Energy: Increase your natural energy flow, which can lead to increased vitality and a greater sense of peace.
● Enhance Emotional Processing: When the body is relaxed and energy is flowing, you may find it easier to process emotions and insights gained during therapy.
● Cultivate Deeper Self-Awareness: Connect with your inner wisdom and intuition on a deeper level.
